Last week Frieze New York launched their ambitious online edition: virtual viewings for over 200 galleries using sophisticated AR (augmented reality) technology to showcase the various exhibitions. In addition, there are a number of fascinating conversation series between artists, curators and various specialists offering an intimate insight into the art world as they speak to the public from their homes. Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, discusses public health disasters and Chinese government censorship as a crucial role in his work and its relevance with what is happening today with the coronavirus pandemic. An intimate interview from Ai Weiwei about the truth relating to the coronavirus and China’s response to it.

ART BASEL’S ZOOM CONVERSATIONS: GALLERISTS IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

Art Basel has launched the first of their Zoom discussion series, led by Global Director Marc Spiegler in conversation with gallerists from around the world sharing their thoughts on how the pandemic has affected the art world and how galleries have had to re-invent the way they interact with the public and collectors. Insights from gallery founders Lorraine Kiang Malingue (Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong, Shanghai), José Kuri (kurimanzutto, Mexico City, New York City), Emanuel Layr (Galerie Emanuel Layr, Vienna, Rome) and Lisa Spellman (303 Gallery, New York City).

DUBAI’S ALSERKAL AVENUE HAS LAUNCHED MULTIPLE VIRTUAL CONTEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Check out Dubai’s hip Alserkal Avenue who have launched detailed 3D views on a range of contemporary exhibitions, video discussions by curators and artists with their new alserkal.online experience. Despite closed doors, new virtual exhibitions are launching led by gallerists allowing you to stay on top of Dubai’s art scene. Highlights include postcolonial Moroccan artist Mohamed Melehi at Alserkal Arts Foundation, Syrian painter Safwan Dahoul’s Dream Series and Palestinian photographer Rula Halawani depicting diverse landscapes of her home country at Ayyam Gallery.

ANDY WARHOL BROUGHT TO LIFE AT TATE MODERN WITH CURATORS GREGOR MUIR AND FIONTÁN MORAN

The Tate Modern has temporarily had to close its doors but curators Gregor Muir and Fiontán Moran bring the current exhibition on Andy Warhol to life. They shed light on this major retrospective as they discuss the artist’s life, career and take us virtually step-by-step through each room of this exhibition. This virtual tour is definitely worth checking out as it is informative, interesting and gives us a glimpse into the way the curators constructed the exhibition.

THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO KEEPS ART ALIVE FOR YOU WITH VIDEOS FROM THEIR CURATORS

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao says that “although the Museum is closed, behind the scenes it is very much alive and the art it holds is willing to come out” as they have launched a series of interesting videos. Check out curator Lekha Hileman Waitoller discussing Yves Klein, former soccer player and coach Ernesto Valverde talking about his favourite work or the museum team providing insights into how artworks are exhibited, shipped or restored.
